Our galaxy is flat like a pancake, with the spiral rings a minor but attention getting constituent within the pancake. An axis can be drawn through the center of the pancake, with a north and south pole. The North pole points in the direction of Coma Berenices, a constellation with one of the odder mythologies (the queen sacrificed her tresses to appease Newtune and get him to withdraw a monster he had ravaging the coast). Our Solar System is tilted 70 degrees to the plane of our galaxy, but from studies of binary stars, it appears that there is no tendency for orbits of planetary systems or multiple stars to line up with the plane.
The orbits around the axis, however, do line up.What is the North Galactic Pole and what constellation is it in?If you drew a line through the center of our galaxy that was perpendicular to its plane, the north galactic pole would be the point in the sky that line appeared to point at. It is in the constellation Coma Berenices, which has no bright stars. It is near the tail of Leo.
