What does the cancer constellation look like?

Cancer with its four brightest stars connected like an inverted ' Y ' is a very dull looking constellation with an open cluster, 'Paresepe' (Bee-hive) in its middle. Its luminary (brightest star of the constellation)

'Altarf' 尾 Cancri of magnitude 3.52; is the 288th brightest of all stars.

The other brighter stars are

'Asellus Australis' 未 Cancri (magn.3.92), 479th brightest

喂 (iota) Cancri (magn.4.02), 526th brightest

'Acubens' 伪 Cancri (magn.4.25), 656th brightest %26amp;

'Asellus Borealis' 纬 Cancri (magn.4.66), 1070th brightest.

If constellations are ranked each with its luminary (brightest star in the constellation) arranged in decreasing brightness, 'Cancer' is 62nd (of 88).

'Praesepe', the most prominent open cluster (with the exception of 'Pleiades' that is too open to be called a cluster) or 'M44' is beautiful, viewed through any telescope.

The distinguishing feature of is that in the days of yore, Sun used to have its northern most limit in the Ecliptic here. Its geographic counter-part is 'Tropic of Cancer'.

I see it as a faint triangle of stars with the Beehive Star Cluster in the middle. I usually find it by drawing a line between Castor and Pollux in Gemini and Regulus in Leo. 7x50 or 10x50 binoculars are a big help in seeing Cancer.



Cancer is currently too close to the Sun to be readily observed.What does the cancer constellation look like?Cancer is a rather dim constellation.
