Can the Southern Cross constellation be seen from hawaii?

Yes it can be seen but it's never more than a few degrees above the southern horizon. Today, it appears at about 4 a.m. and starts to disappear into the twilight soon after 6 a.m. It will be rising at 2 a.m. by the end of January, and at midnight by the end of February. By May, it will be visible in the evening sky, but you need an unobstructed view towards the south in order to see it.

Edit: Just to echo Geoff's comment. The southernmost bright star of the Southern Cross is at declination -63潞. That means that the whole constellation is visible as far as latitude (90潞 - 63潞) = 27潞 north. Can the Southern Cross constellation be seen from hawaii?Crux, the Southern Cross, is visible from Hawaii. At this time of year it is visible on the southern horizon just before sunrise.

[Edit] Many wrong answers here! Hawaii is at latitude 20掳 to 22掳 north, close enough to the equator that Crux is visible. Crux is also visible from southern Florida and Texas. Don't answer if you don't know the correct answer! Can the Southern Cross constellation be seen from hawaii?I saw it from the Big Island in February 2005.

The southernmost star of the constellation is at a declination of 63.2 South (I am rounding).

In theory, it is visible (at least when it passes due South) at a latitude of (90 - 63.2 =) 26.8 North

Since the other stars of the Cross are at smaller Southerly declinations, they would be visible from further north.

Since the Big Island is (roughly) at latitude 20 N, this means that the entire Cross can get to almost 7 degrees above the horizon.

If you go up on the mountain (and towards the South of the island), you can get another degree or two. For example, where a road goes through and old lava stream (Chain of Craters Rd), you would be at latitude 19.3 N and at an elevation of 600 m (2,000 ft). The "bottom" of the Cross (for us) could reach 8 degrees above the horizon, with the "top" at 14 degrees above the horizon. Can the Southern Cross constellation be seen from hawaii?Download a great Planetarium programme for free!
