So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/scienc鈥?/a>So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?Because obama is a moron and he doesnt know what he is doing. So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?
I thought conservatives were about less spending???So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?He wants to use that money to promote his socialist agendas..
I don't know, because tax payer money is being spent on stupid things like healthcare , 2 wars, and a shitttty economySo why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?Healthcare and a socialist agenda are more important that anything like that.So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?
I thought you guys didn't like science.
Fiscal conservation.

Look it up if you have forgotten what it looks like!!So why did Obama cancel the constellation project to send us back to the moon and possibly mars?
And if he hadn't you would be wailin', "Why is Obama wasting all of that money going to Mars".

Y'know... the way y'all think is not the mystery that you think it is.
On this I agree with BO. It may be the only thing. The space program is a waste of money; always has been and always will be.
Did he do that? Good for him! What a huge waste of money! Sure it would be cool, but it is not worth an unlimited amount of money.
The astronauts have already been there and gathered the required data, now it is onward for additional space exploration. We the people of course have not received the 'real information", so it is hard to justify any additonal space travel for "no reasonable return". Cover-up? probably. Isn't that the usual modus operandi?
It's not an entitlement program, and there's no way to tax it. It also would demonstrate America's technological superiority. Mustn't have that.

It also proves this guy is no JFK!
President Obama is calling on NASA to cancel the program that was to return humans to the Moon by 2020, and focus instead on radically new space technologies.

pay special attention here: and focus instead on radically new space technologies.

get it new technology,no different than retiring old jets.

Did you read this article or just the head line? The above was the first paragraph!!

How'd you miss it?
Something like 25% of our GDP went into the moon program - you got that kind of money?

The moon program was the REASON for the very high taxes in the late 60's and early 70's - you guys would flip out if Obama asked you for even one cent in taxes to pay for them. You know that right?

And nobody's landing on mars - not and coming back anyway, the logistics are a nightmare, it will never happen until we invent a completely NEW kind of power source, guaranteed!

Which constellation will Mars go in retrograde this late autumn?? and for how long?

and when will it go back again?

also, can anyone explain, when it goes retrograde, like it is passing a car it seems like it is falling back?

but what about when it goes forward again?

i dont understand that part.

anyone can explain what is happening when it seems to go back and then forward again?

and again when will it do this?

please explain.Which constellation will Mars go in retrograde this late autumn?? and for how long?Mars goes stationary in Leo by mid/late December 2009, then slowly move retrograde around xmas eve. Retrograde motion will continue and somewhat faster as Mars moves to opposition on January 29, 2010. Mars will be just north east of the M44 the "Beehive" star cluster in Cancer. On Feb 4 Mars will be about 2 degrees north of M44.

Retrograde motion will continue as Mars moves through Cancer but will slow down and go stationary once more in early March. By the middle of March Mars will be moving forward ("prograde").

What causes this? Retrograde and stationary motion in a planet is APPARENT ONLY. What we see is a parallax effect from the motions of both our Earth and Mars (the other planets show similar motions, though when you get far out from the Sun these motions are small).

When you are seated in a car or bus (mainly that someone else is driving) especially on a multi-lane highway or freeway, look out the window and observe how other cars that you approach and then pass appear to move against distant landmarks or mountains behind. Clearly they are moving forward just as you are. Yet as you approach them they start to slow down relative to the background and then begin to move backwards from your perspective.

As you pass the other car(s) they continue to move backwards. The road starts to curve (the orbits of the planets are curved remember) away as the other cars now some distance behind us slow their apparent backwards movement and then begin to move forwards again relative to the background.

Think also of racetrack footage from the driver's point of view. As the car approaches slower moving cars they appear to move backwards as the car passes them.Which constellation will Mars go in retrograde this late autumn?? and for how long?I have no idea what all that means but i can tell you I'm about to eat a Mars Bar and that will take a few hours to pass.Which constellation will Mars go in retrograde this late autumn?? and for how long?Things we know.

Retrograde refers to a backward revolution or orbit. The planets revolve around the sun. The sun passes through the sky.

The constellations refer to the 13 (now 14, actually) signs of the zodiac.

Something we can infer.

Since Mars doesn't have a retrograde rotation, it must refer to the apparent direction mars travels in the sky (while orbiting the sun).

Sun travels through sky, mars travels around the sun (while it's traveling through the sky). So mars goes forward, then backwards, while traveling across the sky. Check when it is using whatever program you're using.

Which month us aquarius constellation best seen in winter?

The winter months are poor for observing Aquarius, because it is closer to the Sun in the sky.

The constellations are named after the animals or the things that they appear to look like or represent. There are 88 recognised constellations and none of them appears to be named after an inventor. The source link below gives all the constellations and what they are named after.

Anyone know which one it could have been? When I was a kid (1980's) I remember hearing about a star that died/disappeared from a major constellationi believe you are talking about SN 1987 A,it was a supernova in the satellite galaxy of the milky way, known as the large Magellanic cloud.it was identified as a 12Th magnitude star, and was a blue super giant, when it went supernova it was bright enough to see with the naked eye, magnitude 2.8,and all this happened in 1987,hence the name, and it happened in the southern constellation of dorado, aka, the gold fish...When I was a kid (1980's) I remember hearing about a star that died/disappeared from a major constellationYou may be thinking of the Nova (new star) that appeared in the constellation of Cygnus, hung around for a few weeks, then faded out of existence again. Which major stars or "Star clusters" are located in the constellation of Scorpius? and Orphecus?

what is the new section they cut out of Scorpius to name Orphecus and when, why this happened too?was this nasa that did this or who, when, how decided?

please xplain anything you can too about the stars, star clusters? (WHAT IS DIFFERENCE btw?)

thanks for your answers!Which major stars or "Star clusters" are located in the constellation of Scorpius? and Orphecus?Scorpius contains many bright stars, including Antares (伪 Sco), 尾1 Sco (Graffias), 未 Sco (Dschubba), 胃 Sco (Sargas), 位 Sco (Shaula), 谓 Sco (Jabbah), 尉 Sco (Girtab), 蟺 Sco (Iclil), 蟽 Sco (Alniyat), 蟿 Sco (also known as Alniyat) and 蠀 Sco (Lesath). Most of the bright stars are massive members of the nearest OB association: Scorpius-Centaurus.Due to its location on the Milky Way, this constellation contains many deep sky objects such as the open clusters Messier 6 (the Butterfly Cluster) and Messier 7 (the Ptolemy Cluster), NGC 6231 (by 味虏 Sco), and the globular clusters Messier 4 and Messier 80.

Orphecus is not any Constellation, it is Ophiuchus. The brightest stars in Ophiuchus include 伪 Ophiuchi, called Rasalhague (at the figure's head), and 畏 Ophiuchi.Barnard's Star, one of the nearest stars to the Solar System (the only stars closer are the Alpha Centauri binary star system and Proxima Centauri), lies in Ophiuchus.

Ophiuchus contains several star clusters, such as IC 4665, NGC 6633, M9, M10, M12, M14, M19, M62, and M107, as well as the nebula IC 4603-4604. The unusual galaxy merger remnant NGC 6240 is also in Ophiuchus. In 2006, a new nearby star cluster was discovered associated with the 4th magnitude star Mu Ophiuchi.

Star clusters or star clouds are groups of stars. Two types of star clusters can be distinguished: globular clusters are tight groups of hundreds of thousands of very old stars which are gravitationally bound, while open clusters, a more loosely clustered group of stars, generally contain less than a few hundred members, and are often very young. Open clusters become disrupted over time by the gravitational influence of giant molecular clouds as they move through the galaxy, but cluster members will continue to move in broadly the same direction through space even though they are no longer gravitationally bound; they are then known as a stellar association, sometimes also referred to as a moving group.

Star clusters visible to the naked eye include Pleiades, Hyades and the Beehive Cluster.

A star is a massive, luminous ball of plasma held together by gravity. At the end of its lifetime, a star can also contain a proportion of degenerate matter. Stars are formed within extended regions of higher density in the interstellar medium, although the density is still lower than the inside of an earthly vacuum chamber. These regions are called molecular clouds and consist mostly of hydrogen, with about 23鈥?8% helium and a few percent heavier elements. One example of such a star-forming region is the Orion Nebula. As massive stars are formed from molecular clouds, they powerfully illuminate those clouds. They also ionize the hydrogen, creating an H II region.

There are different single-letter classifications of stars according to their spectra, ranging from type O, which are very hot, to M, which are so cool that molecules may form in their atmospheres. The main classifications in order of decreasing surface temperature are: O, B, A, F, G, K, and M. A variety of rare spectral types have special classifications. The most common of these are types L and T, which classify the coldest low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Each letter has 10 sub-divisions, numbered from 0 to 9, in order of decreasing temperature. However, this system breaks down at extreme high temperatures.

Hope that Helps!!!!Which major stars or "Star clusters" are located in the constellation of Scorpius? and Orphecus? To add to Ian's excellent answer. Ophiuchus is nothing new. It is at least 4,000 years old and was known by the ancient Greeks. In fact Scorpius is younger because Scorpius was a part of Libra just 2,000 years ago.

This is well before Nasa, because Nasa is just some 50 years old.

  • What's your favorite constellation and why?

Scorpius. I like how I can see almost all of its stars, and how it resembles a scorpion. And I'm a scorpio too. lol, but honestly, I like all bright constellations--Orion, Canis Major, Centaurus, and CruxWhat's your favorite constellation and why?Lyra the Lyre.

Why? Because it is the best joke...

Q: What is the star Vega named after?

A: A very bad small car, the Chevy Vega.

Q: And what constellation is Vega in?

A: Lyra the Lyre (liar) who was the guy who tried to sell you the Vega.

Also Vega is the brightest start in the summer sky and the ring nebula is in Lyra which is a neat deep sky object visible using a telescope even from very light polluted areas like Los Angeles.

    P. S. Incase you didn't know a Lyre is a small hand held harp.

    P. P. S. For those who answer Pleiades ... it's not a constellation - it is an asterism (a well know grouping of star found within a constellation or made up of stars from different constellations. (Other examples: The big dipper (only part of Ursa Major) and the summer triangle (made up of stars from Cygnus (the swan), Aquila(the eagle), and Lyra)What's your favorite constellation and why?
My favorite is Cygnus. The swan flies along the summer night Milky Way with her neck extended toward the bright central region of the galaxy. Her wings are spread across the Milky Way. Her head is a brilliant gold and blue double star. Her body is filled with millions of stars as that arm of the galaxy trails off from the core. Her wing brushes back the Veil Nebula. What more could you ask for in a constellation? What's your favorite constellation and why?Orion, because it is large and the easiest to recognize. And because the three main pyramids on the Giza plateau are aligned in the same orientation as the three stars in Orion's belt; and the size of the pyramids corresponds to the apparent magnitude of the three stars.

    .
Orion, because the ancient Egyptians used it as a guide when building the Great Pyramids at Giza. comparing the pyramids and the Nile River to Orion's Belt and the Milky Way Galaxy...they match perfectly. I think that's pretty coolWhat's your favorite constellation and why?I like the Plaeides. If I could do it I'd join Orion chasing them across the sky for a while. I like M45 a lot, but mainly I just can't see how Orion could be wrong. Those ladies have got something a person has to want. What's your favorite constellation and why?
Actually I have three: Virgo, Leo and Canes Venacti. There are hundreds of galaxies visible with a medium size telescope and a dark location.
The Plaeides,..to understand why,..just look at it through a telescope,..or even a pair of binoculars,..What's your favorite constellation and why?
I like Orion because even though I live in a light-polluted area, I have no trouble finding it on a clear night.
    Virgo because I'm a Virgo
Orion, because it's one of the few that I can instantly recognise.
Orion. It was the first one I ever saw.

Nebula's near the constellation of Andromeda?

Im doing a project and i cant seem to find any nebula's near my constellation. Most websites give me the Andromeda galaxies not the constellation.Nebula's near the constellation of Andromeda?Do a search using the terms "Andromeda" and "constellation."

Wikipedia contains excellent articles on all the constellations:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_%鈥?/a>

Because it is in a part of the sky far from the Milky Way, Andromeda contains few nebulae. The best known is the Blue Snowball planetary nebula, NGC 7662. Besides the famous Andromeda Galaxy, it contains over a hundred other galaxies.Nebula's near the constellation of Andromeda?Burnham's Celestial Handbook lists only one nebula within Andromeda, and that is the planetary nebula NGC 7662. If you follow this link, you can scroll to page 110 of the volume, which provides a list of the readily observable objects in Andromeda:

    http://books.google.com/books?id=xq9MGuJ鈥?/a>

Now, this is misleading in a sense. The Andromeda Galaxy was called a nebula until they determined how big it was and how far away it was. And if you look closely at the spiral arms in that galaxy, you will certainly see dozens of regions where nebulae are present within that distant spiral of a trillion suns.

Using the current definition for the term "nebula," Andromeda is pretty sparse, since it is in the direction facing out of our own spiral toward intergalactic space. Not much gas and dust there. To find gas and dust, you have to look all the way to the next galaxy - M31.Nebula's near the constellation of Andromeda?Thats due to the fact that there is no Nebulae in Andromeda - what was supposed for a long time to be one actually turned out to be the Andromeda Galaxy

Whats the location of leo constellation relative to earth?

far, or really really far, depending on what in Leo you're talking about.

You see, a constellation is a region of sky. Astronomers use constellations to describe where in the sky something is. The sky is divided into 88 different constellations.

Leo, of course is one of the signs of the zodiac. It is located between Virgo and Libra. During this time of year, it's pretty easy to find in the night sky...

Wait until around 11pm (or wait until later in May, then look around 10pm), and find the big dipper. Locate the two stars in the cup of the big dipper that are attached to the handle. Line those two stars up, and form a line downward. That line will take you across the sky to something that looks like a backward question mark. The bright star at the base of the backward question mark is called Regulus. The backward question mark forms the head and mane of the lion, Leo.

Why doesnt the full moon always coincide with the sun beginning in a new constellation in opposite sign? No.Why doesnt the full moon always coincide with the sun beginning in a new constellation in opposite sign?Sometimes they may coincide, but the moon phase (28 day cycle) has no connection with sun signs/constellations (roughly a 30 day cycle).

When the constellation Libra is in the southern sky at 8 pm, which zodiac constellation rises in the west?

8 pm doesn't matter! It can be any time when Libra is in south, the constellation you want is always rising then.

And really, all objects rise in east!

And finally, the stars just risen above the horizon depends on your latitude on earth. When the constellation Libra is in the southern sky at 8 pm, which zodiac constellation rises in the west?No zodiacal constellation, including Ophiuchus, rises in the west. When the constellation Libra is in the southern sky at 8 pm, which zodiac constellation rises in the west?Astrology is not astronomy.

In the constellation Pisces, what is the hottest star called and the largest star?

Spectral classification can quickly tell you about the stars in this constellation.

You first need a catalog, see source link for one example of Pisces.

The hottest stars are the O followed by the B stars. When there are multiple O or B stars, look to the next number. They are in 10ths, 1/10, 2/10, 3/10, etc. The lowest number means the hottest star. No O stars in Pisces, so we look to the B stars, and 53 Psc is a spectral type B2.5IV star. This was the closest to the B0 side, making it the hottest in surface temp. Its surface temperatures of about 15000K.

The largest star will be a blue super giant, or a red giant:

Morgan-Keenan system is the luminosity class expressed by the Roman numbers I, II, III, IV and V, expressing the width of certain absorption lines in the star's spectrum. It has been shown that this feature is a general measure of the size of the star, and thus of the total luminosity output from the star.

Class I are generally called supergiants

    Class II brightgiants

    Class III simply giants

    Class IV subgiants,

Class V either dwarfs or more properly main sequence stars

    Class VI are Subdwarfs

    Class VII are Whitedwarfs

Hipparchus 117887 is a spectral type M5IIb, b means it is less luminous, but still large in diameter.

    22 Psc is a spectral type K4II

    Hipparchus 1421 is a spectral type K0II

    58 Psc is a spectral type G8II

    Hipparchus 4382 is a spectral type G8II

19 Psc is a spectral type C5II, C is a carbon star, but again the II lets us know that it has a large diameter.

One of these is your largest star. If you said most massive, you would have a different answer. In the constellation Pisces, what is the hottest star called and the largest star?see this link

The blue-white or white stars are the hottest

Someone said "the sun starts in the constellation virgo, and then..." what does that mean?

and i dont mean a horoscope. means that the sun starts its year in the constellation virgo? is that what that means?Someone said "the sun starts in the constellation virgo, and then..." what does that mean? The fall equinox is in Virgo. Some calendars (e.g. Jewish) have important dates around then.

Who is this someone? It might help figure out what (if anything) they're talking about.Someone said "the sun starts in the constellation virgo, and then..." what does that mean?As the earth rotates, it makes it seem that the sun is moving across the sky, but the stars (i.e. constellations) seem in a fixed position because they are so much farther away. So apparently the sun moves across the constellations as we spin. While all this is going on the earth (the vantage point) is moving around the sun a little bit (1/365th) each day, so the "fixed' backdrop of starts changes gradually over time too.Someone said "the sun starts in the constellation virgo, and then..." what does that mean?As the Earth moves around the sun, it looks as if the sun moves around the Earth. But the stars are far away, so they don't appear to move much. (The nearest ones do move, a little: that's called "parallax.") So during the year, it looks as if the sun swings around the sky along a path called "the ecliptic," which runs through several constellations, including Virgo.

Is it true that the TAURUS constellation is viewable in January from Europe?

actually wikipedia says that it crosses the meridian on 15th Jan 21:00Is it true that the TAURUS constellation is viewable in January from Europe?Hi Realistic!

January is when Taurus is at its best.

It's at its highest, due south in the sky from Europe, late in a January evening. Better still, it is well up in the eastern sky shortly after sunset on January evenings. I prefer to look for it in early evening, when you'll find it in the east, heralding the rising of Orion.

In Europe, you could see Taurus as late as the first week of May. It first comes out in the pre-dawn skies in July. You can't see it between early May and July because during that period the sun is passing through Taurus, so it's only up in the daytime. Is it true that the TAURUS constellation is viewable in January from Europe?Yes. Taurus is visible at some point in the night, year round, with the exception of the heart of summer, when the Sun is located in and near that constellation. The winter months are the prime months for viewing Taurus, although you can see it early mornings, just before sunrise in autumn, and catch is just before sunset in the spring. Is it true that the TAURUS constellation is viewable in January from Europe?Yes.

See for yourself; for example: http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/YourskyIs it true that the TAURUS constellation is viewable in January from Europe?
Yes. The same constellations are visible at the same local time everywhere on Earth, except for extreme northern and southern constellations.

Can you see the constellation Andromeda from New Brunswick, Canada?
Sure. You can see it when it isn't cloudy.

Download this month's Northern Hemisphere map, print it, and go outside. Can you see the constellation Andromeda from New Brunswick, Canada? For sure.Look for the great square of pegasus, and Andromeda is like a handle starting at the northwest corner (upper left)and looks like a line of 3 or4 stars running northward. Can you see the constellation Andromeda from New Brunswick, Canada?
High in the East in the fall, sort looks like a W. M31 (a galaxy) is close to it.
    yes

Did old astrologers beleive that the full moon marked the beginning, middle or end of opposite constellation?

    why so for this?

Did old astrologers beleive that the full moon marked the beginning, middle or end of opposite constellation? That doesn't have anything to do with it. The full moon comes at the beginning of the month, and the end of the month...through out this month the moon changes signs/constellations many times.

As far as the moon is concerned, the constellation/zodiac will be changing every 2.5 days, give or take.

Since there are 12 signs in the zodiac, the opposite constellation will arrive in 2.5x6= 15 days, give or take.

And I say give or take, because not all constellations are the same size...some are actually much bigger than others, that's why if you look at the houses on a Zodiac wheel, some are bigger than others...

I'm at lat. 33掳 long 117掳 or in So. California at December 18, 2009. I think it's southeast? Or wrong? Can't make out star chart, looking for constellation Scorpio?Unfortunately, the constellation Scorpio is up during the day at this time of year and isn't visible. The best time for viewing the constellation at night is during the summer months. By mid-July Scorpio forms a very distinctive-looking giant fishhook in the southern sky. By late fall Scorpio sets about the same time as the Sun and won't be easily visible again until next summer.

I hope that helps. Good luck! Can't make out star chart, looking for constellation Scorpio?1) There is no constellation called "Scorpio." The correct name for the constellation is Scorpius.

    2) The Sun is currently in Sagittarius, quite close to Scorpius, so that Scorpius is lost in the Sun's glare. Scorpius will become visible just before sunrise in another month or so.Can't make out star chart, looking for constellation Scorpio?Hi... You should be able to see Scorpio around noon, if you'd turn off the Sun! Scorpio is a very visible constellation in the southern sky on mid Summer evenings, though, when the Sun is down and the sky is dark! Antares is a bright, orange-red star in Scorpio, quite visible. With binoculars, there is a great star cluster just to the West of Antares. Can't make out star chart, looking for constellation Scorpio?

For the NASA constellation program, when is it happening?

For Science Project. For the NASA constellation program, when is it happening? The Ares spacecraft of the new NASA Constellation program is due to first launch in June 2011.

It will replace the current Space Shuttle program and is intended to fly resupply missions to the International Space Station, as well as missions to the Moon and eventually a manned Mars mission.

The program will use space shuttle technology to power the spacecraft and it will come in an unmanned, manned and cargo versions.

    According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ares_I

"Ares I is the crew launch vehicle being developed by NASA as a component of Project Constellation. NASA will use Ares I to launch Orion, the spacecraft being designed for NASA human spaceflight missions after the Space Shuttle is retired in 2010. Ares I was previously known as the Crew Launch Vehicle or CLV. The larger, unmanned Ares V is being designed as a complement to the Ares I; it will be the cargo launch vehicle for Project Constellation. Ares I and V are named after the Greek deity Ares, who is identified with the Roman god Mars...

On 4 January 2007 NASA completed the Ares I system requirements review.[7] This review was the first major milestone in the design process of the Ares I rocket. Going forward, NASA intends to refine the project requirements through 2007, beginning project design later that year. Project design will continue through the end of 2009, with development and qualification testing running concurrently starting in 2008 and running through 2012. At the same time, flight articles will begin production towards the end of 2009 for a first launch in June 2011."

Approximetly how many stars are there in the constellation scorpius?

That can't be answered. It depends on where you set your brightness cutoff. So do we count 8th magnitude stars? 10th magnitude? (which would include thousands more). Scorpius lies near the plane of the Milky Way, not far from the center, so if you counted all the stars that could be seen by any method, it would probably be over a billion.

    Edit: Here, look at this.

    http://www.scienceandart.com/photoscorpi鈥?/a>

How many stars do you figure are in that picture, keeping in mind that the big bright band is all distant stars.

Then, you might just limit it to these stars:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Scorp鈥?/a>Approximetly how many stars are there in the constellation scorpius? This question can't be answered. A constellation isn't a physical reality: it is just a group of stars in the same general direction which form an arbitrary pattern as seen from Earth. How many stars are in that group depends on how faint the stars are you want to count, and how deep in space you want to go. For example, Scorpius contains a number of globular clusters, each of which contains a hundred thousand stars, so that's a million stars right there!

When Mars or any other planet appears to go "retrograde" ..does it stay inside the limits of 1 constellation?

for example, Mars will go retrograde in October in Leo , back in forth several times, but it stops at the end of Leo and goes back to front and then back again, and again? but does this within the area of the old zodiac contellation markings for Leo.

is this the same way for all "retrogrades" of planets?

    why so or this?

    please explain.

Thanks for your answers! When Mars or any other planet appears to go "retrograde" ..does it stay inside the limits of 1 constellation? Not always within one constellation, depends where the retrograde motion starts, how long for,and the size of the constellation. In the 'real' sky all the constellations are different sizes, not 30 degrees each,as in Astrology. You can check the size, shape, and boundaries of any constellation on a star map. Leo is one of the bigger ones. Mars staying in Leo around October is just how it is for that event....it changes year by year, for all the planets. The reason it happens is how we see Mars or any other planet from where we are....Earth moves round the Sun twice as quickly as Mars does,so the viewpoint is changing constantly...if we're moving on the same side of the Sun as Mars,Mars appears to travel fairly quickly through the constellations because we're closer to it then, same as 20mph cars close up travel quicker across our line of vision than the same car seen from a mile away, but because we're both moving in the same direction, Mars' motion seems slower.....the two effects cancel each other a bit,but not entirely,so Mars seems to slow down and speed up. When we're closest we seem to be overtaking it quite quickly, and Mars is moving 'backwards' in the sky....later,we'll be travelling nearly at right angles to Mars, and after that we'll be the opposite side of the Sun to where Mars is,so we're moving one way and Mars is moving the other. Mars is further from us then,so it appears to move slower in the sky,but we're moving in opposite directions, which appears to speed it up...same as before, but reversed...Mars' apparent speed across the sky changes. The effect varies all the time, day by day,as the distance and relative direction of travel of the two planets vary...how fast Mars is moving across the constellations, therefore how long it stays in one,is always changing, one way and the other. Add it all together, and you get a series of loops in the apparent motion of Mars, because the orbits are not in the same plane, but inclined at an angle to each other...Mars only gets half way round it's orbit when we've done the full circle in ours,so Mars is only directly opposite the Sun from us,called 'opposition',every two years, actually about two years and two months, which means Mars is 'two-months-worth' of it's orbit further round than last time, and we're 'two-months-worth' further round in ours. How far that makes Mars in the sky from where it was at it's last Opposition varies year by year..... Direct and retrograde motion happens with any planet, inside or outside our orbit. Jupiter Saturn, and all the more distant planets, have direct and retrograde motion ..Same for Venus and Mercury. They ascend in the evening sky, then drop

again and reappear in the morning sky, where they again ascend and drop again..direct and retograde motion. We don't see a whole loop each time because it goes both sides of the Sun...we see a half-loop in the evening apparitions, and the other half in the morning apparitions.....have you got Stellarium? Worth getting...free download...very good program... shows you where the stars and planets are for any date, anywhere on Earth. http://www.stellarium.org .. . BTW,mapping the constellations has nothing to do with planetary movements. Altogether, the Sun, Moon and Planets may pass through 22 constellations, not just the 12 used in 'regular' astrology. Ophiuchus, for example,is sometimes called the 'mysterious' thirteenth sign, but the Sun passes through it every year. When Mars or any other planet appears to go "retrograde" ..does it stay inside the limits of 1 constellation?think that is how constellations came about they marked off the areas that planets went back and forth in the sky.

  • Is the constellation 'Gemini' related to Ancient Egypt in any way?

Ancient Egypt had a very different set of constellations than the set we inherited from the Greeks, who got them from Babylon and ultimately Sumeria. Our Gemini constellation seems to correspond, at least in part with a Lion constellation in Egypt (the name of one of the stars, Mekbudah, is the Arabic for "outstretched paw of a lion", and is also the name of one of the hottest dishes ever created by mankind--be warned if offered it). However, the Dendarah globe, which is our best depiction of the Egyptian sky, cannot easily be matched with the modern constellations because the Egyptians did not indicate most stars on it.Is the constellation 'Gemini' related to Ancient Egypt in any way?this question belongs in history or astrology

    Which phones have constellation viewers?

A friend just bought a Droid and it has a constellation viewer app. I'm looking for a new phone and love that app, but I've had it with touchscreens and would like something with a keypad, too. Is the Droid the only phone that has this app?Which phones have constellation viewers? The app your thinking of is Google Sky, its an app created by Google and is available on any Android device. The Droid branded phones are the only ones that run Android but the new droid is not the only phone that will have it.

The other droids: Motorola Droid, HTC Eris, LG Ally, HTC Incredible will all have the apps as well.

I'm guessing they got the new Droid X, has a real big screen. If you haven't tried out the touchscreen on it you really should first because I hate touchscreen keypads as well, but this is the one phone I actually like the keyboard because the phone has such a big screen, it makes the keyboard really big too.

But if you want a Droid with a keyboard, the Motorola Droid and LG Ally both have keyboards as well. If your willing to wait there is also a new Motorola Droid 2 coming out later this summer, it will basically be a faster version of the Motorola Droid and it will still have a keyboard.

All the droid phones have access to the Android Marketplace and there's currently around 66,000 apps out for the phones that just do all kinds of things.

One of the main apps I use is called Shop Savvy, it scans the barcodes on products then looks the product up and finds the cheapest price in both Online stores and Retail stores. So if you have any stores around you that has a policy where they match the lowest price of any store around, you can easily scan the product your looking for, see if anyone else has it cheaper and then show them and they'll lower the price for you! Its great.

How do you locate constellation scorpio?

With out knowing where you are on the Earth no one is going to be able to give you an exact area of the sky to look at. It lies between Libra to the west and Sagittarius to the east. Scorpio can be seen near the southern horizon by observers in the Northern Hemisphere near Ophiuchus. It's quite bright and looks like an elegantly drawn, cursive "S". The "S" is divided up into three groups of stars - each containing three stars in a short line.

In what part of the sky is the virgo constellation found in each season?

plz helpIn what part of the sky is the virgo constellation found in each season? The constellation Virgo is found in the Zodiac, that band of constellations along the ecliptic (roughly, near the celestial equator). Virgo is found by following the line formed by the handle of the big dipper (part of Ursa Major). Following the curve of the handle, the first bright star you come to is Arcturus, a large red star (and third brightest star in our sky). Continuing on the curve, you'll come to Spica, the blue-white principal star in Virgo. In what part of the sky is the virgo constellation found in each season? From the northern hemisphere, Virgo is generally seen as it swings from southeast to southwest as the night proceeds. In the winter and early spring, it is visible there in the pre-dawn hours. During late spring and early summer, it is well-placed for evening observers. By late summer, it is approaching the western horizon as the sun sets. In late fall and early winter, Virgo is difficult to see since it is lost in the glare of the sun.

Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?

because you are on the wrong side of the planetWhy is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?Astrology is much different than astronomy. Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?
Because the zodiac as we know it was implemented a long time ago. The planet's position in the sky in relation to the signs of the zodiac has shifted a constellation. Sorry, but I don't know the technical terms for it.Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?the sun is in your constellation during your birth month. it is in the sky during the day time, directly behind the sun.

your constellation will be promeniently visible, in the night sky, 6 months from your birth month. Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?
well your constellation is always in the sky, you just cant see it cause of our atmosphere.

the astrology calander goes bye which constellation the sun is in for that month. but unfortonatly because of "precession" which is the movement of the solar system threw the galaxy, the signs have shifted. for example, most astrologers would call a person born march 21, an "Aries" because the sun was supposedly in that direction of that constellation on march 21. but due to precession, the sun was actually in the constellation Pisces on that date!

your actual sign = actual location of sun at your birth

    Aquarius = Capricorn

    Pisces = Aquarius

    Aries = Pisces

    Taurus = Aries

    Gemini = Taurus

    Cancer = Gemini

    Leo = Cancer

    Virgo = Leo

    Libra = Virgo

    Scorpio = Libra

    Sagittarius = Scorpio

    Capricorn = Sagittarius

so its that the constellation it by the sun and the calender is out of wack. Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month? It's astrology's subtle way of saying, 'you suck'.

Actually, your constellation is the one that the sun was in when you were born.

It isn't always necessarily visible at night, depending on where you were born in the world then and are in the world today.

Those constellations are also way out of sync with where they were when it all started thousands of years ago, when you were very young.

聽Why is my constellation not up in the sky during my birth month?
First and foremost, Erik N is correct about precession, but is in error in what causes it. Precession is not the motion of the solar system through the galaxy, it is the change of direction of the earth's axis over time. It is caused by tidal pulls from the sun and moon on the earth's equatorial bulge. It is the same type of effect you see when you spin a coin or a top. After a few seconds it starts to wobble.

Otherwise, Erik N is correct in that since astrology was created over 2000 years ago, the axis of the earth has shifted enough that all of the astrological signs are off by one. As he so correctly indicated, if you were born in early April, you are called an Ares, but the sun was actually in Pisces.

Also, Osto11 is correct too. The reason you do not see your sign on your birthday is because it is very close to the sun. It is still there, but the light from the sun overpowers the light from the stars of your sign just as it does to all the other stars during the day. Even though the sun is not in your sign, it is still only one sign away and that is still too close.

Now if you really want to, depending on the time of year, you can try looking just before sunrise or just after sunset and you might get a glimpse of some of the stars of your sign, but it is very doubtful you will see the whole thing.

And of course as Doug M points out, Astrology is not the same thing as Astronomy. The latter is a science. The former is part of the occult, just like Tarot cards or crystal balls and has it's own forum under "Entertainment and Music" and in the "Horoscope" section.
osto11 is right. The Sun is in your constellation on your birth date.

When will The Obama administration decide Project Constellation's fate.?

When will we know for sure if it is allowed to go ahead as the previous president promised or if it is to be completely or partly cancelled? Will we know soon? When will The Obama administration decide Project Constellation's fate.?We have been told that sometime next year in 2010, the Human Space Flight Plans Committee will present its recommendations to the President.

I won't speak for the man, but it is quite likely that the Moon program will be canceled. Not because we don't want to go back to the Moon, but because it's really expensive, and we already have too many expenses to worry about. It's been said that if we want to make room in the budget for a manned mission to the Moon, we would have to abandon the ISS, and probably actually de-orbit it for destruction, so that it can't start to blow off dangerous chunks of debris every time something hits it (not to mention its being one big piece of space junk at that time in and of itself).

Further, our "robots" that can be sent to other bodies in the solar system are becoming more and more sophisticated, making them increasingly useful as exploratory tools. They will never replace a human being, but they do a pretty good job, at far less expense, and at far less danger. When will The Obama administration decide Project Constellation's fate.?

Which is the dullest star and which constellation is it in?

The dullest star is so boring that no one has ever bother to name it, However it is in the constellation of Narcolepsy. For obvious reasons it difficult to get good observations about it.Which is the dullest star and which constellation is it in?Astronomers don't use the term "dullest" to refer to stars.

They refer to the "dimmest" stars.

And that depends on whether you mean the dimmest we can see (apparent magnitude), or the dimmest in absolute terms (absolute magnitude).

The dimmest that the human eye can see without aid is apparent magnitude 6.5.

There are about 3000 stars of that magnitude in our night skies.Which is the dullest star and which constellation is it in?
YES, it's a confusing and antiquated system but the higher the magnitude the dimmer the star! Just one of those "traditions" of Astronomy that never seem to die.

It's not really a star (although it looks like one) but the Great Nebula in Orion's belt is a 6th magnitude object.

    http://www.sizes.com/units/magnitudes_tb鈥?/a>

If you can identify it (it's pretty easy to find, I'll get a link for you) it will give you an idea of what 6th magnitude looks like.

    http://homeboyastronomy.com/wp-content/u鈥?/a>

It's a little hard to figure out which constellation has the dimmest "visible" star because we only seem to think much about the brightest ones but I wouldn't be surprised if Cancer "The Crab" took the prize. Even the constellation itself is pretty hard to pick out. And it does have a 4.5 magnitude star called Iota Cancri with an even dimmer companion star that has a 6.5 magnitude which someone with fine eyesight in optimal conditions "might" be able to see.

    China 2020-2030

    Europe 2024

    Russia 2025; moonbase by 2027-2032

Russia and China are actually working on the Moon program together, which might speed things up a bit. With the Constellation project cancelled, when can the world expect the next moon landing to take place?Unless there is a point to the whole thing, probably never.

Or five years after we get a working fusion power plant. I have been wondering and waiting and waiting and waiting......

So I have given up trying to guess when; but it will not be soon I think.

What constellation is depicted in Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night"?

What is the folklore of the constellation Cygnus PLZ ANSWER?

    Info From: http://www.starshine.com/frankn/astronom鈥?/a>

"Cygnus the swan, was not always a swan. Greek legend tells a tragic story of Apollo鈥檚 son, Phaeton, who tried to drive Apollo鈥檚 chariot across the sky. Apollo warned him not to drive to close to the Earth lest he set it on fire. Phaeton lost control of the wild horses, and to spare the Earth a fiery destruction, Zeus threw a lightning bolt at the young boy, killing him instantly. The horses climbed higher into the sky, scorching a path that became the Milky Way. Phaeton fell into the river Eridanus. Cygnus dove repeatedly into the river to try to retrieve the body of his friend but failed. Zeus was so impressed with Cygnus鈥?devotion to his Phaeton that he turned him into a swan, enabling him to dive more easily. Cygnus was eventually rewarded for his gallantry by a prominent place in the summer skies within the cloudy path of the Milky Way."

  • Large constellation on the celstial equator near pisces and aquarius?

There *isn't* any large constellation there! The celestial equator intersects the ecliptic smack between Pisces and Aquarius and all along it, this is a relatively dead part of the sky. Are you sure you have the Aquarius and Pisces part right?

As one person said, Cetus is to the south, but mostly pretty far off the equator. It's big, but not very impressive, especially from northern latitudes above 30 degrees, (in case that's where you are). North of this area is Pegasus and the great square is easy to see, but again, that's pretty far away from Aquarius. Could you check again? I'd be interested in figuring this out. Because God wanted it that way.

Why is anything placed in the sky? How are we humans supposed to know? Why was the musca constellation placed in the sky ?The constellation of Musca was originally created by Petrus Plancius from the stellar observations of Dutch sea navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman when exploring the southern hemisphere.

http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-sp鈥?/a>Why was the musca constellation placed in the sky ?
    Well for one thing,

a constellation is a cluster of stars arranged to look like something,

Without stars you don't have a constellation.

Therefore if there is a constellation, it will be in the sky somewhere.

If you're looking on this planet, you are doing something wrong. Why was the musca constellation placed in the sky ?To keep the firmament in balance. Why was the musca constellation placed in the sky ?
Musca means The Fly and it lies at the foot of the Southern Cross (Crux). It was introduced at the end of the 16th Century by Dutch navigators called Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Hout. (this period was the time that naming the new Southern Hemisphere constellations was all the rage) It was originally called Apis, the Bee. There is not much of note in the Fly other than part of the dark Coalsack Nebula which spills over from Crux.

I assume that it was placed in the sky in honour of these navigators, as it lies in a fairly barren part of the visible Southern Sky with the brightest star of the Fly being (alpha ) Muscae having a magnitude of magnitude of 2.7.

Which constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?

None. Constellations are a group of stars that form an image. Constellations are only relative to the Earth. The actual stars of a "constellation" are no where near each other. One may be twenty lightyears away while another is 100 lightyears away from the observer. They were formed into images by humans.

If you were on another world around another star in another part of the galaxy, or even outside of the Milky Way, you would not recognize any constellations as the ones we have named on Earth would no longer exist.

So to simply answer your question there is no constellation near that point of time and space.Which constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?the one that says if we can look through a telescope and see something closer up,, maybe telescope lenses sit on the moon and that is what those craters reaaly areWhich constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?
That is a good question, we at the present time do not have telescopes powerful enough to see back to where the big bang was, maybe in the future we might have the equipment to see back that for.Which constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?None. The big bang didn麓t occur at the center of the universe. It happened everywhere. So the universe doesn麓t have a center and thus you can not really pinpoint a star that is closest to it.Which constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?
None. All directions are equivalent, and if you could instantly transport yourself 13.6 billion light years in any direction, you would be in the middle of it. The big bang was an expansion of space itself, not of anything in a space. Which is a bit mind-boggling, but that's the nature of general relativity.Which constellation is closest to the spot where the Big Bang occurred?None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Unless you or others fascinated by the Big Bang Theory can tell me first who started the Bang

(cause and effect), who supplied the materials (cause and effect), and where the materials came from (cause and effect, ad infinitum, ad infinitum, ad infinitum).

Or let me simplify the enigma. Would you believe me if I told you that the Seiko watch on my hand - very, very, very, very much simpler than the dynamics of the universe or the make-up of a human body - actually came together after a Big Bang

"happened" to a block of steel right up my alley? Or would you call me a liar or a lunatic, passionate I may be in my assertion? Tsk. ....tsk......tsk. Next question please, other than this search for a constellation.

it doesn't. it's high in the sky in the summer. Why does the constellation orion disappear in the summer months? It's overhead in the daytime in the summer, behind the sun.Why does the constellation orion disappear in the summer months? The better question is why does Orion appear in the winter. As the Earth orbits the Sun, a different region of the stars will fall into the area that is convenient to observe.

In the winter, Orion will be above the horizon in the evening hours, from sunset to 11 PM, when most people go out to look at stars. During the spring and summer Orion is above the horizon during daylight hours, when the Sun's light washes out the dim stars. During autumn Orion will be above the horizon after midnight until sunrise, when most good little boys and girls are sound asleep.

Each season has its constellations that are convenient to observe at that time of the year. Why does the constellation orion disappear in the summer months?to hotWhy does the constellation orion disappear in the summer months?
It's because of the tilt of the earth. In the summer, depending on where you live, it disappears below the horizon. If you live in the north hemishpere then it would be below the horizon in the summer. When you can't see it, people in the south can see it. When they can't, you can. In between the summer and winter if you watch like every week, you can see how it moves higher when winter comes, and lower when summer does.

Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?

The way I heard it, he told NASA to get rid of Constellation and aim for Mars. Now, don't get me wrong, I think Mars is essential when it comes to exploration of worlds outside our own.

However, I think he seems like a douche for just going "nope" to NASA. I mean, seriously, who do you think is more intelligent? Hundreds of Rocket Scientists and Astronauts and Aerospace Engineers or one person?

What are your thoughts?Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?I think it makes sense to spend money on researching and developing spacecraft that will be capable of making flights much farther than just to the moon.

After all, we have already been there, and spending huge amounts of money just to go back there will delay a flight to Mars or beyond by a decade or more.

    ***

"I mean, seriously, who do you think is more intelligent? Hundreds of Rocket Scientists and Astronauts and Aerospace Engineers or one person?"

No one doubts the intelligence of NASA engineers, but they don't get to decide what projects to work on. Those decisions are made by the President and his many advisors.Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?
NASA follows national policy it does not create it

Lets have a little more respect for OUR president,, next insult gets the "abuse button"

It is a cost benefit Q.

Why did we stop the Moon landings?

Remember the shuttle was supposed to be a cheap safe reliable "space truck". Was it would you fly and airplane with that death rate?

I wish congress and senate would not "just say no"Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?Where do we start cutting costs and start sending jobs to the private sector? If the private sector is always better (at least according to Republicans), then we need to start somewhere. These people can get jobs with the new openings or businesses that will replace this portion of NASA. They can make more money too.
Obama's Messiah Complex just keeps getting in the way.

Obama really thinks he is something, doesn't he?

A little crack smoker in college - lost in life - no direction - virtually no experience - and now he is telling NASA what would be best for their future?Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program? Its really a battle between science and propaganda. The Constellation program had a lot of propaganda value but not much scientific value.Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?
I hate to say it, but NASA may need to privatize more to generate more cash flow.
We have been travelling the same route to the moon/space station for decades. We've been there and done that. A new goal is needed.Do you think it was right of Obama to fiddle in NASA's "Constellation" program?
    Elections have consequences.
I would have to say it made me angry. I mean it is kinda the future of us to travel outside of our planet.
Infidel! You must be a racist! The FBI will be coming to look at your voter registration card!
Hell...I don't think its right for Obama to fiddle with the Presidency !
    He has one goal,,,

Destroy the U.S.A. and everything that made it great.
Establishing a lunar base is very important for future exploration and expansion. By establishing a lunar base, it becomes possible to manufacture space vehicles and send them off at a fraction of the cost due to the absence of much of Earth's gravity that current space vehicles must fight against. Not to mention the Moon's supply of Helium-3.

Although there is not as much scientific value besides learning how to live on space rocks with little gravity (asteroids, which are important because they have many resources such as platinum and aluminum), a lunar base is essential to future space expansion. Eventually this expansion would lead to an exporting industry in the Asteroid Fields.

Mars, while it is of mild scientific interest, is harder to set up a base on. It's farther away. You can only go to Mars when Earth and Mars line up/close to each other. Planetwide dust storms can seriously impair equipment. Mars' gravity makes it impractical for a profitable exporting industry to develop.

In response to the mindless OH PRIVATIZATION IS SO GREAT; yes, in a competitive market, space travel and the aerospace industry would become more efficient. This is true. However, you must look at the conditions of a competitive market. Most relevant to this discussion is the "Infinite Buyers/Infinite Sellers" condition, otherwise known as "Atomicity" (economists like giving different names). This essential factor to a competitive market is that there are many sellers AND buyers that would compete with one another. Without this level of competition, it would simply be some sort of oligopoly and efficiency would not be reached. Why is the market not atomic (many buyers/sellers) you ask? Because there's no money to be made in space (as of yet). Which is why the aim of privatization in Obama's plans makes no sense.

Why do you think government projects are needed at all? Because private firms and investors are unwilling to do so, when the projects would benefit everyone. Usually the reason is that there are high entry barriers (high initial costs, like dams) or that there is little to no profit for the individual firm (which is applicable in this situation).

Ironically, the best method to privatize the aerospace industry was the Constellation project.

  • WHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?

Hi. Usually Betelgeuse and Rigel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(cons鈥?/a>WHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?Rigel and Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse is the reddish star above and to the left of the belt. Rigel is the bluish star below and to the right of the belt, (in the northern hemisphere.).WHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?
Orion - and they are Rigel and Betelgeuse

That is my son's name Orion! Merry Christmas!WHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?Betelgeuse and Rigel are the brightest stars in the Constellation. Even though Betelgeuse is designated Alpha Orionis, and Rigel is Beta Orionis, Rigel is almost always brighter than Betelgeuse. Rigel is a brilliant blue star that is relatively young, and Betelgeuse is a huge red star that if placed in our solar system would extend past the orbit of Mars!! That is a radius of more than 141 million milesWHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?
Betelgeuse is the bright reddish star at upper left, Rigel the bright star at lower right, Bellatrix the star to the right of center above the belt. Saiph is centered near the lower edge of the picture below the belt. Orion's head is marked by the trio of stars at the top of the picture just left of center, the brightest of which is Meissa. Mu Ori is just up and to the left of Betelgeuse. The the red glow in the middle of Orion's Sword is the Orion Nebula, which is lit by Theta-1 Ori. The multiple star Sigma Orionis is just down and to the rightof Alnitak, while Eta Orionis (Saif al Jabbar) is the second star down and to the right of Mintaka. To the upper right is a vertical string of stars all named Pi Orionis, from top to bottom Pi-3 (Tabit), Pi-4, Pi-5 (the one with a neighbbor), and Pi-6. Pi-1 and Pi-2 are off the top of the picture. W Ori is the second star down and to the left of Pi-6, while VV is the right-most star of the trio to the left of Alnilam. Orion's upraised club, topped by Chi-1 and Chi-2 Ori, rises off the picture at upper left; the two "Chi-stars" are visible on the images of both Gemini and Taurus. Betelgeuse is at the northwest apex of the Winter Triangle.WHat are the 2 brightest stars in the constellation orian?I'm betting that there are stars with intrinsic brightnesses brighter than Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis), and possibly brighter than Rigel (beta Orionis) and which lie within the boundaries of Orion. I'm also guessing that some of the stars within M-42 (the Great Nebula in Orion's sword) fit that criteria. It is their extreme distance that makes them seem dimmer. I'm also betting the question referred to apparent brightness, and not intrinsic brightness, so...nevermind.
