Why was the constellation Argo Navis broken down into Carina, Vela and Puppis?

Because it was too large and unwieldy. Don't forget Pyxis!

Eta Carina is about to pop and wanted a region of the sky named after her. As for Vela, well, Orion and Cassiopeia haven't been getting along too well lately. He got her a Taurus in honor of our 75th time around the galactic core. Didn't go over too big. So he got Vela a Vega which he found in Lyra and she's been showing her appreciation ever since.
